Personal Projects - A Welcomed Diversion

A couple of months back my wife Mary was on me about taking some more recent photos of our daughters. She figured hey why not, my husband is a photographer so he should be doing this. To her credit, she has a valid point and had actually asked me on numerous occasions to do this. I just never made the time.

I figured there was no time like the present to take care of this long standing request for her and make her happy. Now in MY defense, it wasn’t all me that was preventing this from being done. The girls were quite hard to nail down for this as well. I decided to choose a day and talked to my daughters to see if this worked for them as well, we all agreed on set a date for the shoot.

The day arrived and I set up all my gear. We were finally ready to get down to shooting. We spent a few hours shooting, laughing and joking around and it was an absolute blast and I got to spend some quality time with my girls. It was so much fun. They had a blast posing and hamming it up for the camera. They were serious when they needed to be and hams the rest of the time. It was incredibly easy giving them direction and they even came up with and suggested ideas to me. It was a true collaboration between subjects and artist.

My wife was pleased, the girls were pleased and so far everyone that has seen them is happy with them. I fully believe that the experience comes through in the images that we created on that day and I hope that it shows to you the viewer as well.

Personal projects are a great diversion from the regular day to day grind. It takes your focus off of your work for awhile and allows you to just let go, experiment, play behind the camera, attempt things you normally wouldn’t do, shake things up a little and see what falls to the ground. You may just be pleasantly surprised. I know I was with the results below.

Please have a look and enjoy the images below from my shoot with my two beautiful daughters. I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I enjoyed shooting them.
