You know I heard something the other day that struck me as quite peculiar and after giving it some serious thought, I found it to be quite true. It revolves around this whole New Year’s resolutions and new beginnings thing.
I was listening to the radio in the car and the DJ was talking about the top 10 New Year’s resolutions people make and listing them off. She then said “if I am going to make a promise to do something for me or to better myself, why the hell am I going to wait until a certain day of the year to do it? Why wouldn’t I do it right then and there? Right away? Perhaps the simple fact of the matter is, most people just don’t think about these things until the last day of the year because it’s so engrained in us to make New Year’s resolutions we figure we are going to make those promises to ourselves at the end of the year anyway”
I thought about it for a minute and it struck me as so true. Why do people wait until the new year to start new things like working out, eating healthier, lose weight, quitting smoking and the list goes on and on. Where did all this begin and why?
Is it because they figure it’s a new year, a clean slate? Fresh beginnings? Mind you, I am sure people aren’t sitting around in June or July thinking, ok I am going wait until the new year to start working out or quit smoking or be nice to people. We have all made New Year’s resolutions I am sure. It just got me thinking as to why so many people wait until the last day of the year to make promises to themselves to do things to better themselves etc. starting the next day?
Does it take on that much more significance for someone on the last day of the year? Are you going to be more serious about it if you promise yourself to start something in the new year?
I guess my thinking is, we should ALWAYS be striving for better for ourselves all throughout the year! Live life now. Take chances. Quit smoking. Do it now! Don’t wait! Although, as it is the beginning of 2016 you really have no excuse.
